How much food should I feed my puppy?

  • Updated

Every dog is different and we recommend consulting with a qualified vet to establish the ideal amounts for your dog.

Depending on physical size and breed, puppies will mature at different rates and have different nutritional needs. For instance, rapid growth occurs during the first few months in all breeds but is prolonged in large and giant breeds, for example Great Danes, Labrador Retrievers, and Doberman Pinschers. Whilst most of the breeds mature around 12 months of age, in large and giant breeds it may take up to two years to reach adult size. For more information, we recommend reading the pfma guide on puppy nutrition.

A puppy requires extra nutrients to support its growth and development. While all Harringtons dog foods are suitable for dogs 8 weeks and above, our puppy variety is specifically tailored to puppies from 3 weeks onward and contains the correct vitamins and minerals, proteins and fats to account for growth and development. While you can feed our adult varieties to a puppy, more will be required to match the levels of nutrition that a puppy requires.

Puppy Feeding Guidelines

The feeding tables below show suggested approximate daily amounts for Harringtons Puppy Complete Rich in Turkey & Rice Dry Dog Food based on your puppy's expected ADULT body weight, although we recommend feeding according to appetite.

If you are unsure, please see our guide: What should my dog(s) ideal adult body weight be?

To introduce at weaning we recommend moistening with water or milk to soften the food and feeding 3 or 4 meals a day, gradually reducing the amount of liquid added, until your puppy is eating solid food. The addition of warm water or goats milk to help make the puppy feel fuller for longer.

We would always recommend puppies be fed 3 times daily. Once your puppy reaches adult age, you can reduce the number of meals offered to two a day.
